Abstract

This study aimed to describe the role used by the teacher when teaching procedural texts in
the ninth grade of SMP Amir Hamzah Medan and the reasons the teacher used this role. Data
were taken from an English teacher by means of observation and interview. Data analysis in
this study used the Miles and Huberman modes with three stages, namely data reduction, data
display, and drawing conclusions. This study used the theory of harmer where in this theory
there were eight types of teacher roles. This study found that there were four roles used by
the teacher when teaching procedural texts, namely the teacher's role as controller, prompter,
source, and observer. And the roles that were not implemented were assessors, organizers,
participants and tutors. And from the results of this analysis, it could be found that the reason
teachers used this role is to adjust the needs of their students. During the learning process, the
teacher used the role of controller to keep the class atmosphere conducive. The teacher used
the role of prompter when students cannot answer questions, while the teacher used the role
of observer to measure students' abilities by asking questions. While the teacher used the role
as a source to deliver material to students. The roles used during learning are as a source,
controller, and prompter. Meanwhile, at the end of learning, the role used is the teacher as
observer.
