Abstract
This research aims at analyzing the function of sirih ‘betel leaf’ and rokok ‘cigarette’ as tokens for invitation to the wedding ceremony in Minangkabau. The research findings indicated that the meaning of the text interview, the analysis of the text interview based on SFL (Systemic Functional Linguistics) and the meaning of sirih and rokok based on the semiotics multimodal. The result of data analysis was that the multimodal meaning of the text interview, as the visual element, was an invitation wedding, especially for the main family and for the verbal element, the tokens had the meaning of an opening word or introduction. The dominant process in the analysis text in SFL was the Relational process, with 29.6 and Mental Process, with 25.9%. Also, in logical function, the dominant is Hypotactic Enhancement (α x β) with 43.7%. And based on Semiotics Multimodal, the tokens had the meaning of the introduction as the main purpose, with deeper meaning for the receiver of the tokens. The novelty of this research is that the use of sirih (betel leaf) and rokok (cigarette) as the token in Minangkabau invitation weddings was functional linguistics and it is not been researched yet.
