Abstract
This study is about the teacher’s strategies in teaching listening skill of recount
text for the tenth grade students of SMK YPI Amir Hamzah Medan. There were
two aims of this study. The first aim of this study was to find out the teacher’s
strategies in teaching listening skill of recount text. The second aim was to
investigate why the teacher uses them in teaching listening skill of recount text.
The data for this study was taken from the teacher who taught tenth grade in SMK
YPI AMIR HAMZAH Medan 2021/2022. The research design of this study was
descriptive qualitative research. The data was analyzed using Buck's (2013)
theory of teaching listening strategies. The instruments for collecting data were
the video recorder, observation sheet, and interview. The teacher used
metacognitive and cognitive strategies in teaching the listening skills of recount
text for the tenth grade students of SMK YPI Amir Hamzah Medan. The teacher
used these strategies because they were the most effective for her in teaching
listening. These strategies can stimulate students to easily grasp the meaning of
the text they hear. Also, through the steps of the strategy, students can easily
understand what they were listening to and can add new information.
