Abstract

The purpose of this study is to show how to implement the Generating Interaction
between Schemta and Text (GIST) strategy in improving students' reading
comprehension ability in narrative texts. This research method was qualitative.
The subject of this study was an eighth-grade English teacher of SMP N 8 Medan.
This study used observation techniques to see if the implementation of the GIST
strateies is in accordance with the steps that should be. This study was analyzed
using the theory of GIST strategy implementation by Chunning in 1982. The
findings of the study show that the implementation of the GIST strategy applied by
teachers when teaching the reading comprehension of narrative text was not in
accordance with the stages suggested by the experts, so that its implementation
was not optimal in improving students' reading comprehension skills.
