Abstract
The objective of this study was to describe the implementation of rewards and punishments in English learning and student responses. This study was carried out
at SMAN 2 Kabanjahe in tenth grade. This research was conducted by qualitative descriptive method. The data of this research were collected from observations and interviews while student responses were taken from questionnaires. Based on the analysis of data it was found that teachers implement rewards and punishments in the English teaching process was to control the students’ behavior in the learning process. The types of rewards that teacher use were praise, applause, adding value and providing support to increase students’ motivation in the learning process. It was found that 97% of students were agreed for the implementation of using rewards and punishment in learning English. This research conclusion resulted was that the implementation of using rewards and punishments by English teacher considered as good. This can be shown from students’ interest and motivation were increased and students’ bad behavior rarely occurs
