Abstract

This research is about the analysis of teacher strategies in involving shy students in speaking activities in grade 10 SMAN 12 Medan. The objectives of this research are to investigate the characteristics of students that have shy personalities in class X-IPS 3 of SMAN 12 Medan and to Investigate the strategies used by the teacher to involve shy students in speaking activities in class X-IPS 3 of SMAN 12 Medan. The research design of this research is qualitative research. The research data were taken from observation and interviews with an English teacher using a camera recorder and voice recorder. In analyzing the data, the researcher used data reduction, data display, drawing conclusions, and verification. The result of this research is that in class X-IPS 3 from 30 students it was found that there were 11 shy students, 8 students were found to have worrisome thought characteristic while 3 students even have anxiety when speaking in the class. The reason they feel this way is because they fear of negative evaluation "FNE", where they are afraid if they are judged by the teacher or laughed at by other friends when speaking in class. In the learning process the teacher implemented some strategies to involve students especially shy ones in speaking activities such as pair work strategy, preparation strategy, repetition strategy, and the most commonly used is mandatory participation strategy. The reason why the teacher used the mandatory participation strategy the most is because the teacher wants all students, especially those who are shy, to have the same opportunity to discuss, ask, and answer questions while learning in the class without any obstacles from their shy personality.
