Abstract
The aims of this study were to describe types of processes and participants in students
descriptive texts and to investigate how the conformity of processes and participants
in students’ writing to the theory of linguistic features of descriptive text. This study
was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data were in the form of
clauses of students’ descriptive texts. The data were collected by documentary
technique. The instruments involved in this study were the researcher and the data
sheets as secondary instruments. From the research, it was found 392 clauses of 20
students’ descriptive texts. The result of this study showed that six types of process
occurred in student’s clauses, they were: material process (31.61%), mental process
(4.88%), relational process (53.21%), verbal process (3.34%), behavioral process
(0.77%), and existential process (6.16%). The most dominant types of process is
relational process. For the participants, the most dominant participants were Carrier
(16.14%) and Attribute (15.36%). Based on the results of analysis, it showed that
there were the conformity between types of process in students’ descriptive texts to
the theory of linguistic features of descriptive text because one of the linguistic
features of descriptive text were using specific participant and using clauses with
relational process
