Abstract
This study was aimed to find out the process of teaching writing descriptive text
by using Jigsaw technique and problems faced by the teacher during its
implementation. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative. The
procedures of analyzing data were formulated based on the theory of Creswell
which consists of observing, interviewing, analyzing, and concluding. The data
were the result of observing the way teacher taught by using Jigsaw technique and
interviewing the teacher at SMP Negeri 1 Panyabungan. The study aimed to
discover the problems of unsuccessful of learning process using Jigsaw technique.
The data were analyzed based on teaching learning process by using Jigsaw
technique. The findings showed that the teacher follow the procedure of Jigsaw
proposed by Aronson (2008), however there were several steps of Jigsaw
technique that did not occur during the teaching and learning activities. First, the
teacher did not give sufficient time to read over their segments. Second, there was
no active discussion as it should be. Third, there was no quiz at the end of the
lesson to assess the student’s ability. There were also some teacher’s problems in
teaching writing descriptive text by using Jigsaw. The problems were: (a) Students
were passive and not enthusiastic, (b) low vocabulary mastery of students. (c)
Third, limited time of English lesson in classroom
