Abstract
The aims of this study were to describe the appropriateness of transition signals in
analytical exposition texts written by the eleventh grade students of senior high
school. A descriptive qualitative design was used in this study. The data and
source of data were the analytical exposition texts written by the eleventh grade
students of SMA N 15 Medan. The data were collected by using documentation of
writing task. The data were analysed by using three concurrent flows by Miles and
Huberman. The result showed that most students already used the transitions
signal appropriately in simple sentences. However, there were still some
difficulties faced by students in using transition signals appropriately in their
analytical exposition texts. The difficulties are (1) the use of transition signals in
more complicated sentences such as in compound sentences and complex
sentences. (2) Students sometimes used transition signals that are not in
accordance with their functions. (3) Some students still had difficulties in using
transition signals paired conjunctions
