Abstract
The study aims to analyze the interference that occur in English descriptive text
written by students of SMA Negeri 1 Munte. This study was conducted by using
descriptive qualitative design. The participants of this study were students in tenth
grade which consist of 150 students. The participants were taken by snowballing
technique, namely from one third students’ high score and one third students’ low
score in TOEFL and UKBI test. The source of data were the students’ descriptive
text written in English and Indonesian language. The data were the interferences
made by the subjects from L1 into L2 in the writing of English descriptive text.
The research finding showed that the interference only occurs in linguistic
features. It covers morphological interference (5 suffix errors), syntactical
interference (2 word order error and 6 error in numeral sentence writing), and
lexical interference (4 word choice error and 14 loan word errors). The factor
underlying the reason of the interference in English Descriptive text written by
tenth grade is negative transfer of native language (L1) which cover
underproduction, overproduction, and production error
