Abstract
This study was aimed to investigate the types of politeness strategies used by two
English teachers in the classroom and how the teachers realized the politeness
strategies and described the reasons for applying the politeness strategies in the
classroom. This study was conducted by applying the descriptive qualitative
research. The source of the data was the two English teachers based on gender at
SMA Negeri 3 Kisaran. The instruments of this study were recording audio and
video. The research findings were (1) for the female teacher, there are twenty nine
bald of record (33.33 %), thirty eight positive politeness (43.67 %), fourteen
negative politeness (16.09 %), and six off the record or indirect strategy (6.89%);
for the male teacher, there are twenty four bald on record (32.87%), thirty one
positive politeness (42.49%), thirteen negative politeness (17.80 %), and five off
the record (6.84%); (2) politeness strategies by using appropriate face expressions
and utterances were realized to communicate with the students while doing the
teaching learning process in the classroom, especially during the online learning
class. Based on the research findings, both female and male teachers applied
positive politeness mostly in teaching learning process.
