Abstract
This study is aimed at analyzing the use of code switching in the novel Edensor. The main objective of this study is to describe the types, the manner of the realization and the reasons for code switching in non dialogue sentences. It presents the descriptive qualitative method. Accordingly, this study proposes six types of code switching and ten reasons for code switching. The types of code switching are proposed by Gumperz (1977:84) and Poplack in Romaine (1989:78), while the reasons are proposed by Hoffman (1991:116) and Saville-Troike (1986:69). The source of data is taken from the non dialogue sentences of the novel Edensor. The data analysis goes along Miles and Huberman’s technique. The study shows that there are two types of code switching based on the distinction which applies to the style shifting are found in the data and another two types are found based on the position of switched unit. The realization of code switching is shown as its type. Besides, there are nine reasons for code switching in the data. The result shows the gap between the theories and the data obtained; it is concluded that the use of code switching in written communication, particularly in the novel, is different from the use of it in spoken communication. Overall, the discussion adds to the larger perspective of the use of code switching in written communication, particularly in the novel.
