Abstract
This research deals with the students’ self-esteem in speaking English. The aims of this research are: (1) to determine students’ self-esteem high or low at SMAS
Pertiwi Medan, (2) to show how students’ self-esteem realized at SMAS Pertiwi Medan and (3) to explain the categories self-esteem got in speaking English. This
research is conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data of this research are the students’ choices in the questionnaires, result of speaking test,
and all the responses they addressed while interview. The sources of data are taken from 20 students’ with shows the characteristics and spreading population
to get the representative sample.. The data are analyzed by using interactive model in which data were collected through the speaking test, questionnaires, and interview .The findings indicate that 85% of the students’ had very high self�esteem and 15 % had high self-esteem also suggests that the data are of a similar nature, realization and reasons categories students’ self-esteem got in speaking English
