THE EFFECT TEACHING METHODS AND COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE ON STUDENTS ACHIEVENMENT IN WRITING

The aims of this research are to investigate: I) The difference of students achievement in writing taught by using Problem Based Learning and Direct Instruction. 2) The difference of students achievement in writing, who have high and low communicative competence. 3) The interaction between teaching methods and communicative competence on students achievement in writing.This research has been done in SMK MULTI KARYA Medan on first semester of 2009-2010. the method of this research is an experimental with 2 x 2 factorial design. The independent variable of this research is teaching methods and communicative competence, and the dependent variable is writing achievement.The population of this research was XI grade of SMK MULTI KARYA Medan. The sample were taken from two classes (40 students). The first class (XI. I) was taught by using Problem Based Learning and the second class (XI.2) was taught by using Direct Instruction. The data collected were analyzes, with two ways analysis of Variance (2 x 2 ANOVA).The result of this research show that (1) The students achievement in writing taught by using Problem Based Learning is better than by using Direct Instruction. (2) There is significant difference between students achievement h writing of student who have high and low communicative competence. (3) Then, is interaction between teaching methods and communicative competence toward writing achievement. Based on the findings, it is suggested that the Methods should be applied in english instruction to develop the students writing achievement.
