THE STRUCTURE OF DOCTOR-PATIENT INTERACTIONS IN PRATAMA AKSARA CLINIC MEDAN

This study was aimed to analyze the structures which focus on exchange
structures, how exchange structures are realized linguistically, and reason for the
use of exchanges structures between doctors and patients in Pratama Aksara
Clinic Medan. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research.
The data was words, phrases, and sentences which uttered by doctors and patients
and writing all non verbal linguistic that doctors and patients do on medical
consultation process. The data was analyzed based on Martin theory (2007). The
result of analysis found that there were 16 exchange structures used by doctorpatient
interactions on medical consultation namely k2, k2^k1, k2^k1^k2f,
k2^k1^k2f^k1f, dk2, k1, k1^k2f, k1^k2f^k1f, a2, a2^a1, a2^a1^a2f,
a2^a1^a2f^a1f, a1, and a1^a2f. Normally, the structures of giving and asking for
information are represented by k1 and k2, but it was found the corresponding
moves of information, that was k2^k1(k2) or question followed by question and
k2^k1 (a2)^k2f. It was happened because the social context and situation of
medical consultation that include to language style of doctors and patients
whereas patients want their illness be cured. The factors of exchange structures
realized by doctors-patients were age, sex, social class and education. Based on
the findings, it was recommended to the other researchers who are interested in
analyzing exchange structure to conduct such a research with different variable or
other sources to know and understand the flow of conversation
