Abstract

This study focused on representation of gender in English textbook used in tenth
grade senior high school students. The aim of this study are (a) to investigate the
gender representations in the text and picture in the English textbook used in tenth
grade senior high school students, (b) to describe how gender is represented in the
English textbook used in tenth grade senior high school students, (c) to obtain
teachers’ and students own perceptions of gender bias in the English textbook used
in tenth grade senior high school students. This research used descriptive qualitative
research. To answer the problem of the study, the data were collected in three ways
by observing, Interviewing and documentating. The data were analyzed based on
Logsdon aspects (1985). The result of this study revealed that (1) the overall
percentage shows that male is more dominant among the 6 aspects. Especially in
the aspect of female or male pictures where this aspect is dominant in 11 chapters.
Then followed by female and male mentioned that dominant in 9 chapters, female
and male roles in 5 chapters, and female and male games or sport aspect that
dominant in 3 chapters, (2) the representation of gender from text and picture in the
"Bahasa Inggris 2014" Textbook through 6 aspects is represented through several
things such as different ages and occupations, and several pronouns or terms, (3)
teachers and students perception about gender in textbooks showed that they stay
positive. But they are consciously not aware of the existence of gender bias in the
textbooks and they are not too affected by it. However, they suggested that the
contents of the book should be improved and not discriminate against gender.
