Abstract
This study focuses on the usage of address terms uttered by the Parhata or the MC
of Batak Toba wedding ceremony, particularly in Deka S. Saragih and Gabriella
R.S. Simanjuntak wedding ceremony. The aim of this study was to find out kinds
of addres terms that were used by Parhata (MC) of the wedding ceremony, then to
describe the implementation of the address terms uttered by the Parhata (MC) of
the wedding ceremony. The study was conducted using qualitative design, where it
started from identifying, classifying, tabulating, then analyzing the data, the data
gotten from the statements and dialogues uttered by the Parhata (MC) of both
Brides and Groom’s family. Using theory from Brown and Gilman it was found
that there were found three types of address term out of the four types, they were
Descriptive Phrase (4%), Kinship (24%), and Title (72%). Therefore the dominant
type of the address terms used in Batak Toba wedding ceremony was Title. It was
also found that the realization of address terms in Batak Toba wedding ceremony
can be seen on the utterance of the Parhata of the wedding ceremony to show
respect and the highest honor to the bride’s and groom’s family.
