Abstract

The aims of this study was to describe the use of storytelling performance and to
find out the reason of using storytelling performance on students’ self-confidence
in speaking narrative text for ninth grade students of junior high school. This
study used a descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this study was 20
students of IX-1 and IX-2 classes at SMP Negeri 1 Barumun. The data were
collected by using observation, questionnaire, and interview. The findings of this
study showed that (1) Most of the students had a significant effect on students’
self-confidence through storytelling performance. Storytelling performance is one
of the most effective technique on students’ self-confidence in speaking narrative
text. (2) The reason of using storytelling performance on students’ self-confidence
in speaking narrative text were (a) storytelling performance can build reading
interest of the students and it can improve their speaking skills. (b) Storytelling
performance can also encourage students' active participation as well as the use of
their imagination and creativity. (c) Storytelling performance could increase
students’ self-confidence and it can help students to learn about narrative text, and
their understanding of stories and how the students told the stories. Therefore
conducting this activity, many students were interested to pay attention to the
material to be taught.
