Abstract
The aims of this research are identify the distribution of reading exercise questions
based on cognitive domains in Revised Bloom's Taxonomy change the reading exercise
questions in the Lower-order Thinking Skills (LOTS) items into Higher-order Thinking Skills
(HOTS) items. Content analysis was used as the research methodology. The subjects of the
study are in the English textbook “Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK” for year X high
school students published by the Ministry of Education and Culture consisting of 15 chapters.
Documentation as the research instruments to collected the data. The data were analyzed by
using interactive mood technique. Result of the study revealed that (1) The distribution of the
lower-order thinking skills obtained 183 items while the distribution of higher-order thinking
skills obtained 63 items. a) Remembering skill received 100 questions, or 41%, the
understanding skill received 31 items, or 13%, and the applying skill received 52 reading
questions, or 21%. b) Analyzing skill with 38 questions or 15%, evaluating skill with
13 questions or 15%, and creating skills with 12 questions, or 5%. c) The percentage
of LOTS had 75%, while the percentage of HOTS had 25%. To sum up, the data
showed the composition of the higher order thinking skill was still lower than that of
lower order thinking skill.
