Abstract
The objective of this study is to describe of the common errors by students at SMA Negeri 11 Medan, and to analyze error dictation activities using short texts to improve English language proficiency among students at SMA Negeri 11
Medan. The design of this research is qualitative research. This researcher only focus on kinds and causes of errors that made by students‘ in the classroom. The findings in this study are based on data sources, namely interview and tests. The kinds of error in this study are Singular-Plural with total 12 errors. Word from with total 17 errors. Word choice with total 17 errors. Verb tense with total 24
errors. Add a word with total 16 errors. Omit a word with total 23 errors. Word order with total 25 errors. Incomplete with total 26 errors. Spelling with total 17 errors. Punctuation with total 14 errors. Capitalization with total 5 errors. Article with total 5 errors. Meaning not clear with total 15 errors. And run on sentence with total 7 errors. The causes of error are students made in dictation, they are interlingual errors, intralingual errors, learning environtment, and communication strategies.
