Abstract
This research was conducted to analyze the types of students difficulties in speaking recount text and the factors of students difficulties in speaking recount
text at SMK Negeri 5 Medan. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research were all information about types and factors of students difficulties in speaking English. The source of data were 28 students for answer the questioner and 5 students for interview from class X DPIB3 at SMK Negeri 5 Medan. The instruments of this research were, speaking test, questionnaire and interview questions. The results of this research showed that types of students difficulties in speaking recount based on Penny Ur (1991), (1) Inhibition, (2) Nothing to say, (3) Low or uneven Participation, (4) Mother Tongue Use. And the factors of difficulties in speaking recount based on theory As Khan (2005), (1)
Linguistic Factors, and (2) Psychological Factors. Based on the results of the research that has been carried out, students face difficulties in speaking the English language when learning the grammar, accent or intonation of the
pronunciation of each vocabulary that is still not good. Their lack of confidence, embarrassment and anxiety every time they speak English in front of the class.
