Abstract
This study was conducted to analyze the implementation of guided reading strategy and components of guided reading strategy carried out by teachers in teaching reading descriptive text at the seventh grade at SMP Negeri 3 medan. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The data of this study are result of observation and teacher's interview of English teacher at SMP Negeri 3 Medan. The source of data in this research is the English teacher and teaching and learning process. The instruments of this research were observation checklist, video recording, and
interview sheet. This research focused on one English skill, namely reading, especially in the descriptive text genre. The results showed that the procedures in implementation the guided reading strategy were almost all carried out by the
teacher but there was one procedure that was not implemented. Teacher has implemented eight important components of guided reading strategy in accordance with the theory proposed by Pinnel and Fountas (2010). That are : (1) have the goal of teaching reading comprehension, (2) provide high-quality texts of varying difficulty, (3) improve independent reading skills, (4) teach fluency, (5) increasing vocabulary, (6) apply phonemic awareness and phonic comprehension, (7) encourage writing about what is read, (8) foster engagement and motivation to read.
