Abstract
This research was aimed to: knowing the teacher’s strategies in teaching reading
comprehension for descriptive text of tenth grade at SMA Swasta Imelda Medan
and describing the teacher’s implementation in teaching reading comprehension
for descriptive text of tenth grade at SMA Swasta Imelda Medan. In this research,
descriptive qualitative approach used by the researcher involves two instruments
which are observation by record the whole process of teaching reading
comprehension of descriptive text and interview by asking several questions
related to the strategy that the teacher used in teaching reading comprehension for
descriptive text, and the researcher make a transcript as a result of the data. The
data gathered were processed in some stages in the form of data condensation,
data display and drawing a conclusion. The participant of this research was an
English teacher of SMA Swasta Imelda Medan. The result of this study showed
that there were three teaching reading comprehension strategies for descriptive
text used by the teacher in teaching tenth grade students. the strategies were,
Question-Answer Relationships (QARs), Generating Information between
Schemata and the Text (GIST) and Think-Aloud strategies. The teacher at SMA
Swasta Imelda Medan implementing the strategies was by provide the lesson plan
and instructions with task which refers to teaching reading compression strategies.
It helps students to be more confident and active in learning process.
