Abstract

This research concerns teacher oral feedback on student‟s response in speaking
skills at Gajah Mada Middle School, Medan. This research aims to determine
teacher feedback used in English class interactions and how teachers use oral
feedback in English classroom interactions with seventh grade students at SMP
Gajah Mada Medan. The subjects of this research were 32 students and 1 teacher
who will be interviewed. This research was conducted using qualitative
descriptive research. This research was collected by conducting observations and
interviews, using audio recordings, documentation and interview sheets to support
the data results. Data were analyzed using the theory of Lyster and Ranta (1997),
Saito and Sato (2013), . The research results show that teachers use 5 types of the
six types of oral feedback proposed by Lyster and Ranta's classification. Where
the Oral feedback most often given by teachers in Descriptive Text lessons is
Metalinguistic Feedback, which appears 8 times. During class interaction, the
teacher implements or provides feedback during the learning process by asking
questions and answers to students, then the teacher also gives assignments as
student evaluation to determine students' understanding.
