Abstract
The aim of this research was to find out how gender was represented in English
textbooks used for ninth grade junior high school students. The data of this study
text consist of representation gender in English for Nusantara and source of the
data were the all chapters from English for Nusantara. This research used content
analysis technique. In total, there were 488 images and 5 texts containing gender
that were analyzed through the four categories of gender representation proposed
by Abdelhay in 2015. Research findings showed that gender representation in the
English for Nusantara textbook did not show equal results in text. The results of
the research showed that male characters were featured more in terms of
appearances with a percentage of 54%, while female characters were only
46%.Male also had greater role in carried out sports activities, while woman wee
still shown to do public and family roles. To improve gender representation in
English textbooks, a simple plan can be review and update current textbooks by
forming a team of teachers, gender experts, and students then create new materials
with equal representation of both genders and get feedback from teachers and
student also regularly check textbooks for balanced gender representation and
study the impact on students, sharing the results to guide improvements Finally,
work with organizations that support gender equality and run awareness
campaigns to highlight the importance of balanced representation in textbooks.
These steps will ensure educational materials are fair and inclusive, helping
students appreciate gender equality.
