Abstract
The study aims to analyze gender stereotypes in The Woman King movie,
understand how female characters struggle against them, and evaluate the contexts
of resistance. Using qualitative research methodology, 24 sentences were analyzed
using Bem's (1974) theory. The findings revealed that the movie script presents
various gender stereotypes, including masculinity, femininity, and androgyny. The
main female characters, Nanisca, Nawi, and Izogie, fight against these
stereotypes, demonstrating that gender is not a fixed or essential concept but a
result of ongoing social practices. Their actions not only confirm women's strong
gender identity but also emphasize the challenge of gender stereotypes through
subversive actions. The social and cultural context of Dahomey and colonial
threats also influence the female characters' struggle against gender stereotypes.
The Agojie warriors, as symbols of resistance to colonial and patriarchal
oppression, demonstrate how global and local power structures shape their gender
performance.
