AN ANALYSIS OF SPEECH STYLES USED IN THE MOVIE “THE GREATEST SHOWMAN”

This study aimed to identify the realization of speech styles and how those types
of speech styles are used based on Joos in (Chaer and Agustina 2010) and
Romainne's theory as the supporting theory. This study was conducted by
applying the descriptive qualitative method. The data for analysis was extracted
from the screenplay of the movie The Greatest Showman. Qualitative research is
the methodology used to analyze the data. The findings of this study indicates that
Barnum employ four of five speech styles, namely Formal Style, Consultative
Style, Casual Style, and Intimate Style. There were 202 utterances. In total, there
are a total of 16 utterances in Formal Style (8%), Consultative Style with 70
utterances (35%), Casual Style with 93 utterances (36%), Lastly, there are 23
utterances in Intimate Style (11%). After examining the analyzed statements, the
researcher determines how the Speech Styles has been employed. First, the
researcher found that Barnum mostly used Consultative Style and Casual Style in
his utterances. Second, the researcher concluded that his utterances realized by the
influence of few factors namely by social context, relationship of participants,
social class, sex, age, physical environtment and topic.
