Abstract
This study aimed to determine the types of questioning strategies that male and female English teachers used and to elaborate on the reason why the male and female English teachers asked the questions. This study used a descriptive
qualitative research design. The subjects of this study were male and female English teachers and two classes of Grade X at SMK Negeri 1 Binjai. This study used video recording, observation, and interview to collect the data. The findings
showed that there were 4 kinds of questioning strategies used by male English teacher namely wait time, repetition, paraphrasing, and simplification. Probing was not found when the male English teacher carried out the teaching and learning process. Furthermore, female English teacher used all types of questioning strategies namely wait time, repetition, paraphrasing, simplification, and probing. The male and female English teachers asked questions to stimulate students to think critically, improve vocabulary, clarify what students said, attract students' interest in learning, check the extent of student understanding, and encourage students to participate in the classroom.
