Abstract

This study focuses on the analysis of satire in the script of "Jojo Rabbit," a movie
directed by Taika Waititi. The objectives of this research were to identify the
types of satire, analyze their functions, and to explain the satire in each instance
based on its types and functions contributes to the narrative. The data for this
study was obtained from the script of "Jojo Rabbit," and a descriptive qualitative
method was employed for data analysis. Library research was conducted to
analyze the data, specifically focusing on the characters' dialogues and narratives
containing instances of satire. Through the analysis, two types of satire were
identified in the movie, namely Horatian satire and Juvenalian satire, as proposed
by Pagliari's theory. Additionally, three functions of satire which are
Entertainment, Education, and Evaluation were determined based on Droog et al.'s
theory. A total of 51 instances of satire were found in the script of "Jojo Rabbit,"
with 26 instances of Horatian satire and 25 instances of Juvenalian satire. The
functions of satire within the utterances were explained, supported by relevant
examples extracted from the data. This research concludes that "Jojo Rabbit"
effectively employs satire in alignment with both the identified types and
functions of satire. The findings contribute to the understanding of satire as a
literary and cinematic device, shedding light on its impact on the overall narrative
of the film.
