Abstract

This research directs to elaborate the students‘ ability in writing a recount text and
to find out students‘ difficulties in writing a recount text. This research used a
qualitative design. The data of this research are recount texts made by the tenth
grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Kabanjahe. Writing tests and questionnaires are
used as the study's instrument in this study. The results of the analysis show that
they have an excellent level. In details, from thirty-one students who take part in
this research, the researcher found sixteen students at an excellent level, five
students at a good level, seven students at an adequate level, three students at an
inadequate level, and there was no student at an unacceptable level based on
Brown‘s analytical scale for rating writing tasks. Based on the questionnaire, the
students had some difficulties in writing recount text. From the data, it can be seen
40,33% of students responded that they had difficulties in the organization,
57,25% of students responded that they had difficulties in the content, 61,27% of
students responded that they had difficulties in the grammar of writing. There
were 65,93% students responded that they had difficulties with the punctuation,
spelling, and mechanics. There were 81% students responded that they had
difficulties with the style and quality of expression.
