Abstract

This study aims to analyze how teacher applies a scientific approach in teaching
English and to discovers teachers' perceptions about applying a scientific
approach for the tenth-grade students at SMK N 11 Medan. This study used
qualitative research methods. Data and research were collected within one month
in 3 meetings with an English teacher. Research data collection techniques were
carried out by observation, namely video recordings with video transcripts or field
notes, interviews with informants regarding teacher perceptions of applying a
scientific approach and documentation in the form of lesson plans. Data were
analyzed through data collection, condensation, display, and
conclusion/verification. The findings show that teachers must still apply a fivestep
scientific approach in teaching English. The results show that the teacher uses
five steps: observing, questioning experimenting, associating, and communicating
but not perfectly. Based on the analysis of data from teacher interviews, the
researcher found teachers' perceptions of a scientific approach to teaching
English, namely about the way teacher carries out the steps of a scientific
approach in teaching English in class, the difficulties faced by teachers, and the
reasons teachers do it. The teacher has tried to make students observe, ask,
experiment, associate, and communicate activities adjusted to the lesson plans. Its
application in class does not match the reality in the field.
