Abstract

The aimed of this research is to explain how teachers use the RAFT Strategy to teaching descriptive text writing to tenth-grade students. The research was conducted using descriptive qualitative methodology and data was collected from an English teacher at SMA Negeri 3 Medan. The data collection techniques included observation and interviews. The results showed that the teacher used the strategy successfully as observed from the checklist. The teacher followed all the steps of the strategy without missing any, which helped the students learn to write with the "RAFT" steps. This helped the students to identify roles, audience,
format, and topic of their writing. The RAFT Strategy is helpful for students to succeed in learning to write in the classroom. By being actively involved, students can learn and follow the lesson effectively. It also makes it easier for them to identify the objects they want to describe, build a strong understanding of social functions, generic structures, and language features, and develop critical thinking abilities. The research aimed to determine the extent to which students apply their abilities effectively in writing descriptive texts.
