Abstract
This research was about teacher’s initiation in teaching descriptive text based on Sinclair and Coulthard Model. The objectives of this study were (1) to analyze the types of teacher’s initiation on teaching descriptive that occur in classroom interaction at SMPN 2 Sunggal. (2) To describe the realization of teacher’s initiation on teaching descriptive text at SMPN 2 Sunggal. This research used qualitative research method and the data were collected through recording and observation. The data were analyzed based on Sinclair and Coulthard theory (1975). The findings shows that (1) There were 10 types of teacher initiation used by the teacher in teaching descriptive text for students grade VII, namely: teacher elicit, teacher inform, teacher direct, check, listing, re-initiation (i), re-initiation (ii), check, repeat, reinforce. (2) that there were 3 classes of realization of types of initiation in the teaching-learning descriptive text process: elicitation, directive, and informative. Elicitation was realized by teacher elicit, repeat, bound initiation, listing, re-initiation (i), re-initiation (ii), and check. Directive was realized by teacher direct and reinforce.
