Abstract

English is as a local content subject or extracurricular in elementary school.
Elementary school needs to prepare teachers that can understand how to
implement English learning to young learners well. Course book is one of medium
that is needed so much by both teacher and learners in facilitating teaching and
learning process. However, the available course books do not always match with
the learners and the institution needs. Fortunately, the research aimed to
investigate the suitability of the existing speaking material used by learners grade
V at MI Swasta Mardliatul Islamiyah and to develop speaking electronic book (EBook)
for elementary school learners grade v based on task-based learning at MI
Swasta Mardliatul Islamiyah. This teaching material developed in form of
electronic book (e-book) which utilize epub format. This research was done to do
Educational Research and Development (R&D) based on ADDIE proposed by
Dick and Carey (1996) elaborated with Islamic local content in MI Swasta
Mardliatul Islamiyah Medan. The data were collected through questionnaires,
interview and documentary sheet. The data obtained were analyzed and described
qualitatively. The results showed that(1) the existing speaking material does not
support learners to do work actively and relevant book that is needed by learners
is speaking E-Book based on task based learning, and (2) The developed speaking
E-Book based on task based learning has been valid with a percentage of 98.8%
from language and content expert and 93.3% from the layout expert and this EBook
is appropriate with learners‟ needs for speaking skills and got positive
responses from the learners after implementation in the real class with an average
score of 96%. The product was valid because it covered appropriate language,
content, and lay out. The average of learners‟ questionnaires was falling into
appropriate category.
