Abstract
This research deals with teachers‟ manipulation of descriptive text elements. This
research investigates the way the teacher manipulate descriptive text elements in
teaching language skills and to investigate the reason why the teacher manipulate.
This research applied qualitative descriptive method. The participants of the
research were three teachers at SMK Negeri 1 Kisaran. The techniques for
collecting data are through recording three teachers in teaching descriptive text
elements and interviewing three teachers. The results of the research found that
there were 8 ways and 4 aspects teachers‟ manipulation in teaching descriptive
text elements. 8 ways of teachers‟ manipulation are 1) giving definition, 2) direct
experience of describing, 3) illustrating description and linguistic features, 4)
focusing on appearance, 5) focusing on parts of appearances, 6) focusing on the
use of adjectives, 7) focusing on verb use, 8) increasing number of adjectives to
be mastered . And 4 aspects are 1) the nature of description, 2) appearance and
linguistics features, 3) appearance and verb adjective as qualifier, 4) linguistics
features enrichment of adjective mastery. There are some reasons found why
teachers manipulate because of presage variable such as teaching experience,
belief in their skill in knowledge, belief in their skill in teaching that can influence
process variable. It also influenced by context variable such as the students are
lack of interest, less motivation and have different backgorund that can support
them to learn English and both variables also influence process variable as
teaching process does not run well because in process there were students‟
weakness, students‟ minimal response even they did not give response and
feedback in teaching process.
