Abstract
This study aims to describe how gender is represented and to find out the level of
gender awareness in the English Textbooks used by senior high school students.
This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of
this study were two English textbooks used in tenth grade senior high school
sstudent. The data were collected from texts and pictures. The findings of the study
show that gender were represented through the six aspects in all chapters of both
textbooks. In the first textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris, the number of female and
male pictures with ratio 1:2. Female and male mentioned with ratio 7:9. Female and
male roles with ratio 1:2. Female and male games with ratio 3:5. Female and male
female and male role model with ratio 5:6. Pattern in mentioning female and male
names with ratio 1:3. In the second textbook entitled Pathway to English, female
and male pictures with ratio 5:7. Female and male mentioned with ratio 2:3. Female
and male roles with ratio 4:5. Female and male role model with ratio 3:5. Pattern in
mentioning female and male names with ratio 3:7. The level of gender awareness
was also obtained through the six aspect in all chapter of the textbook. in the first
textbook, female and male omission, male were leading by 55% to 45%. Female
and male firstness, male were leading by 77% to 23%. Female and male
occupational role, male were leading by 71% to 29%. Female and male noun, male
were leading by 64% to 36%. 3 kinds of masculine generic construction. Female
and male adjective, male were leading by 60% to 40%. In the Second Textbook,
female and male omission, male were leading by 61% to 39%. Female and male
firstness, male were leading by 70% to 30%. Female and male occupational role,
male were leading by 56% to 44%. Female and male noun, male were leading by
52% to 48%. 6 kinds of masculine generic construction. Female and male adjective,
male were leading by 68% to 32%. The result showed that gender is represented
unequally in both textbooks. Gender bias still exist in both textbooks. Thus, both of
the textbooks are unaware to the gender bias.
