Abstract
This study aims find out how Indonesian audiences feel about the transgender
character in the film Danish Girl and to describe the audience's thoughts and
feelings the film. The study data were the script and the Danish Girl film. This study
was conducted by using the qualitative research method. The data analyzed were
gathered by observation and interview of adult audiences’ perspectives of
Indonesia. The data were analyzed based on Stuart Hall theory named encoding –
decoding theory. The findings indicates that there are three of process of making
meaning there are dominant – hegemonic, negotiated, and opposition. The
participants who are in hegemonic dominant based on LGBTQ activists and their
freedom. Several participants who are negotiated added a set of obligations for the
release of the Danish Girl film in Indonesia. The participants who are opposite utter
that this film violate the Indonesian norms and culture.
