Abstract
This study aims to determine student’s critical thinking skills on the material of the human respiratory system, and the effect of discovery learning on critical thinking skills of students in class XI MIPA Senior High School 5 Medan in the 2021/2022 academic year. The type of research used is descriptive quantitative and qualitative. Purposive sampling with a total of 60 students. The data collection technique used is a critical thinking ability test essay. The questions applied to students were developed based on indicators of critical thinking skills by Facione (2011). The results obtained show that the critical thinking skills of Senior High School 5 Medan students are included in the medium category with an average score of 81. Student’s critical thinking skills on the respiratory system material are dominant in the medium category with an average percentage of 81 (medium category), followed by a low category of 50 (low category). Based on the aspect of critical thinking skills that were treated with discovery learning in the experimental class, it showed an increase in student’s critical thinking skills are situasional factors and dispositional factors. The most influential situasional factors in critical thinking is accountability, while the most influential disposition factors is habituation and training and learning methods. In addition, intellectual development, interaction with other people, learning motivation can also affect a person’s critical thinking ability.
