Abstract
The ability of elementary school students to master English vocabulary as basic capital to form phrases or sentences in English communicating is low because the English learning used is not interesting and fun. The objectives of this study are to design Big Book based on classroom by using simple words, phrases and sentences to teach English vocabulary for 4th grade students in elementary school and to know the feasibility of the designed Big Book. This study is Research and Development research and used 4-D model which has 4 stages namely define, design, develop, and disseminate The subjects of this study were 25 students of grade 4 SD Negeri 028068 East Binjai district in 2019/2020 academic year. The Technique of collecting data used validity test data, practicality test data and effectiveness test data. The instruments of collecting data used interview sheet, observation sheet, questionnaire sheet, and test. The average score of Big Book validation which was done by material and media experts gained 3.53 (88. 41 %) with "very valid" category, the practicality of designed Big Book gained from teachers’ responses that gained average score 3.83 (83.33%) with "practical" category and students’ responses that gained average score 3.30 (82.91%) with "practical" category in individual tryout and average score 3.49 (88.41%) with “practical” category in field tryout. The effectiveness of designed Big Book was gained from the students’ posttest results which gained 92% with “complete” category and the students’ performance percentage after used designed Big Book which gained 88.40 % with the “complete” category. Thus, it can be concluded that designed Big Book based on classroom by using simple words, phrases and sentences to teach English vocabulary for 4th grade students at SD Negeri 028068 east Binjai district is feasible to use.
