Abstract
The objective of the study were describe the turn taking strategies in the Ellen talk show. This study followed the theory of Mey (2001) about the three aspects of turn taking strategies namely (1) Taking the turn (2) Holding the turn (3) Yielding the turn. The data of this study were gathered by using the recording and transcribing. This study revealed that the frequency of taking the turn (45.83%), Holding the turn (35.41%) and Yielding the turn (18.75%). It was found that there were three rules that determined turn taking strategies, namely (a) Next speaker then that speaker should take a turn at the place. (b) Self – selection occur, then first speaker has the right to the turn. (c) Another speaker has self – selected, in which case that speaker gains the right to the turn. In addition, the ways turn taking strategies reason, it was found that there three reason of turn taking strategies. in the Ellen talk show. They were (a) First reason were clean start, verbal filler, An uptake/a link (b) Second reason was silent pause, meta/alert and lexical repetition (c) Third reason was the used of appealing and prompting.
