Abstract
The study describes the euphemism in ‘Sambah Manyambah’ tradition of minangnese wedding ceremony. The objectives were to investigate the types of euphemism used, to describe the process, and to explain the reasons. The research method is qualitative descriptive. The data were collected by a documentary study of ‘Sambah Mayambah’ script written by Abdul Rahman Salman. The data were adapted of technique from Allan & Burridge and were analyzed by using Miles, Humberman & Salbana. The result showed that there were four types: Semantic Change (47%), Circumlocution (14%), Remodeling (14%), Shortening (7%), and a new finding was Uniqueness (18%). The processes in “Sambah Manyambah” were to deliver lexical device (39%), phonetic device (36%), Rhetoric device (18%), and grammatical (7%). The reasons were used ‘Sambah manyambah’ to clarified individual in wedding ceremony (39%), to make polite for a vulgar expresion (36%), and to avoid embarrassment the direct taboo (25%).
