Abstract
The aims of this study are to describe the kinds of figurative language and to
discover the existence of figurative language that is delivered by Kalimbubu,
senina, and anak beru in Karo Batak wedding ceremony. This research was
conducted by using qualitative descriptive design. The data were the utterances
gathered from kuan kuan that are delivered by kuan kuan, senina, and anak beru
of 4 Karo Batak wedding ceremonies in Tongkoh, Aju Julu, Aji Jaheand
Berastagi. The data analyzed by using theory of descriptive analysis. It began
from identifying the data that are needed for this research, classifying the data
based on the theory of figurative language and analyzing the data based on the
theories that were used. The findings are (1) There were7 out of 10 kinds of
figurative language were found in the kuan kuan of Karo Batak wedding
ceremony in Tongkoh, Aji Julu, Aji Jaheand Berastagi which were simile,
metaphor, personification, symbol, allegory, overstatement/ hyperbole, and
irony.(2) The most dominant figurative language in Karo Batak wedding
ceremony was simile, (3) Karo Batak people tent to deliver kuan kuan through
simile which compared between two dissimiler things by using the first
connotations inherent in the other. In addition, the figurative language which were
uttered by the speakers such as Kalimbubu, anak beru, and senina used in Karo
Batak wedding ceremony as a blessing.
