Abstract
This study deals with the development of English reading materials for students of Islamic Integrated School at SMP IT Jabal Noor. The objective of this study is to develop appropriate English reading materials for students of Islamic Integrated School at SMP IT Jabal Noor through Task-Based Learning (TBL). The research procedures of this study were Research and Development (R & D) though six stages; 1) Gathering information and data, 2) Analyzing data, 3) Designing reading materials based on task-based learning, 4) Validating new reading materials based on Task-Based Learning by expert, 5) Revising reading materials based on Task-Based Learning, and 6) Final products (reading materials based on Task-Based Learning). The research was conducted in SMP IT Jabal Noor. The subject of this research was class VIII-D consisting of 31 students. The instruments for collecting data used in this research were documentary sheet, questionnaire and interview. After analyzing the data, the researcher got the students’ needs. The data were gathered by administering interview to the teacher and distributing the questionnaire to 31 respondents to get the students’ needs. The result of questionnaire and interview showed that the students need English reading materials which appropriate to their field that is Islamic field. Thus, the result of this study was a supplementary material of English rading material through Task-Based Learning (TBL) which consist of Let’s Start, Let’s Parctice, and Language Focus. The products have been validated by experts. The average scores are 4.37 from Englih teacher and 4.54 from English lecturer. It means that the developing materials categorized as relevant or appropriate for Grade VIII students of Islamic Integrated School.
