Abstract
This study was case study about code switching used by teacher of grade eleven in MAS Proyek Univa Medan. The aims of this study were:(a) to find out the types of code switching used by teacher (b) to find out the functions of code switching (c) to describe the reason of teacher code switching. The design of the research used qualitative research. To answer the problem of the study, the data collected in three ways by observing, recording, and interviewing which were analyzed by using Poplack,Gumperz, and Chowdhury’s Theory). The results of this research were (a) it was found that there were three types of code switching used by teacher namely: inter sentential switching, intra sentential switching and tag sentential switching. (b) there were found six functions of code switching namely quotation, addressee specification, interjection, reiteration, message qualification, and personalization or objectification (c) The reason why teacher switched the code in English teaching process was class size and maintaining discipline, students have low understanding of English lesson, ease of communication and explaining and translating unknown terms. Meanwhile, for the complete data or result of interview session can be seen in Appendix C.
