Abstract
The research deals with politeness strategies used by Javanese and Karonese students in classroom discussion. The objectives of this study were: (1) to determine the dominant type of politeness strategies used by Javanese and Karonese students in classroom discussion, (2) to explain how those types of politeness strategies are realized by Javanese and Karonese students in classroom discussion, and (3) to find out the reasons why the types of politeness strategies are realized in the way they are. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study were the sentences which is insert with native language in term of word or phrase and with paralinguistic aspect. The data were collected through documentary technique. The technique of data analysis was interactive model. The finding of this study revealed that: (1) Both ethnics have the same dominant type of politeness strategies. Bald on Record was the dominant type for Javanese and Karonese students, (2) Not all of the realizations in each types of politeness were used by the students in group discussion. It was only bald on record which was used by the Javanese and Karonese students. For positive politeness was used in (11) eleven ways. Negative politeness was used in (3) three ways. Then, off record was used in (6) six ways, and (3) there were some reason of using politeness strategies are to keep efficiency, to avoid misinterpretation, to build familiarity, solidarity and friendship among the students, to avoid the threat (or the potential face lose) of advancing familiarity towards the listener, to interpret what the speaker means and to make joke with unrelated words
