Abstract
This study aims to design English Reading Materials needed for students of Access Network Program and develop English Reading Materials based on Task-Based Learning for eleventh grade students of Access Network Program at SMK Sandhy Putra Medan. The research was conducted by Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; 1) Gathering Data and Information, 2) Analyzing data, 3) Designing new material, 4) Validating new material by the experts, 5) Revising reading material, 6) Revised-developing new English reading materials (Final Product). The subject of this research was superior class, XI-TJA 1 which consisting of 36 students. The technique for collecting the data were questionnaire that distributed to the students and interview that administered to the English teacher. The questionnaire was as quantitative data while interview was as qualitative data. Both data were administered to get the students’needs. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials which related to English for Access Network Program. Moreover, developing English reading materials are procedure text. Thus, the procedure text expose the telecommunication theme as the relevant theme with students’ needs. There are 4 texts provided, they are : How to avoid cable from tangled and twisted, How to make straight LAN cable, How to clean inside the CPU, and How to create outgoing call forwarding feature. The products have been validated by the experts, they are English lecturer and English teacher.. The average scores are 4,7 from English lecturer and 4,6 from English teacher. It can be concluded that the developing materials categorized as relevant or appropriate for eleventh grade students of Access Network Program.
