Abstract
The objectives of this study were to investigate the genre used in reading text in three textbook of junior high school in Medan. The data needed to achieve the objective was the components of text structute that is used in three textbook whether it is exist the genre theory. The genre used in the components of text structure was analyzed following Peter Knapp (2005). In addition, it was also aimed at seeking the text structure is used acroos the English textbooks. This study found that was not all of the coponents of text sttructure was used in reading text. The distribution of reading text in the third English Textbook achieve 100% in the first English textbook “Learning More English 2”, 100% in the second textbook “Junior High School eight” and achive 67% in the third Englsih Textbook “When English Rings a Bell”. The percentage of reading text in the third textbook in their text structure is very slow, especially in descriptive text. For the English textbook with the title “Learning More English 2” achieve 58%, for the Englsih textbook “Junior High School eight” achieve 38% and thr third textbook “When English Rings a Bell” achieve 58%. For the recount text, every textbook has completed the text structure. It achieve 100% in every Englsih textbook. For the narrative text, in the first textbook, it achieve 91% and the the second and third textbook, it achieve 100%
