DEVELOPING WRITING MATERIALS IN PROCEDURE TEXT FOR STUDENTS OF THE ELEVENTH GRADE DRESS MAKING PROGRAM AT SMKN 10 MEDAN

The Objective of this research was to develop relevant English writing materials for students of the eleventh grade of dress making program at SMKN 10 Medan in Writing Simple Procedure Text.
The study was a Research and Development (R & D) study which is adapted from Borg and Gall (2003) and Hutchison and Waters (2001). This research were conducted by six phases, they are: Need analysis, course grid design, developing materials, validate by the experts, revising and the last final product. The needs analysis was conducted on 29th July 2017 at SMKN 10 Medan. It was done by giving the questionnaire in the form of multiple choices of twenty questions. There were 31 students as respondents who filled in the questionnaire.
Based on the results of the needs analysis, the students believed that learning English was very important and having good ability in it was important. Then, they claimed that their writing ability was intermediate. They also stated that they sometimes wrote in English. Moreover, they wanted some aspects to be included in the materials such as information about grammar, vocabulary, and the explanation about the genre of the text. In addition, they stated their difficulties were using grammar. Considering the students’ learning needs, they preferred picture as the input.. For the topics, the teacher and the students had same opinion, both of them like the topics that related to daily life. For activities, they preferred to do grammar tests and they choose matching words with the meaning provided as an activity that can increase their vocabulary. They preferred to write text based on what they had been learned. In addition, they preferred work in pairs in doing their tasks.
According to the analysis of the data from the experts, the mean score from the English teacher was 3,86 and can be categorized as “very good” and the second score was the result from English lecturer validation was 3,24 and categorized as “good”
