Abstract
The objective of this study entitled “Grammatical Error by Students in Writing Procedure Text at SMP Negeri 6 Medan” is to find out the types and the causes of grammatical errors in students writing. The study uses qualitative descriptive method. The population of the study is 184 students from the grade of eight junior high school and the samples are 35 students. The technique of data collecting is by giving written test to students. The students were instructed to make procedural text based on two topics, those are: (1) How to make a food, (2) How to make a drink that is students made. After analysing the data, the observer found 4 types of grammatical errors made by the students, those are; omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. Based on the 4 types of grammatical errors, there were four causes of errors that mostly found in students writing, those are; carelessness, inadequate learning, faulty in teaching, and hypercorrection.
