Abstract
The objectives of this study were: (1) to identify the learners’ need for eleventh grade of SMK Harapan Al-washliyah Sigmbal, (2) to develop writing materials needed for students SMK Harapan Al-washliyah Sigambal and to develop the relevant materials for the students. This study was conducted by Research and Development (R&D). The research procedures were adapted form Borg and Gall with some modification. This research design trough six phase: 1) gathering the data, 2) analyzing the data, 3) designing materials, 4) validating by expert, 5) revising, 6) final product. The data of this research were from the existing materials, syllabus, students’ questionnaires and the teachers’ interview. The result of this study shows that the existing materials were not suitable to the computer and network engineering major. The data from need analysis were analyzed using frequency and percentage, then the result were used to develop materials. The writing materials were validated by English teacher and English Lecture. Both of them agreed that new writing materials were suitable students’ need. The product of this study is a set of writing materials entitled “guide for writing” for students of SMK Harapan Al-washliyah Sigambal. The writing materials consist one unit “How to do this”. In the unit consist of pre-writing, drafting, responding, editing.
